The 470 European Championships are heating up after qualifying with Italy’s Giacomo Ferrari and Alessandra Dubbini leading the fleet through tricky offshore breeze, Britain’s Martin Wrigley and Bettine Harris sitting just two points back despite an early UFD, and defending champions Jordi Xammar with Marta Cardona close behind as the top 25 teams move into the championship rounds. On the development side, Australian Sailing has opened applications for a new Performance Pathways Coach in Victoria, a key role based at Royal Brighton focused on talent identification, regatta support and strengthening the pipeline from junior sailors to Olympic campaigns while boosting female participation through Sail Our Way. Meanwhile in the gear world, West Marine’s famous Buy One Get One Free Lewmar winch sale has returned, tempting boat owners with serious savings across a wide range of sizes and likely sparking plenty of dockside partnerships to split the deals. Today’s highlight takes a lighter look behind the scenes at the Sydney Sail Grand Prix, where the action included everything from light wind chaos on the racecourse to surfing lessons, fan-packed party boats and grinders plunging into ice baths after workouts.
Buckley: Building Fandom Is The Key To SailGP’s Success (3 min read)
U.S. SailGP CEO Mike Buckley says the league’s next big step isn’t faster boats, it’s bigger personalities. On the Business of Speed podcast, he pointed out that SailGP already pulled 3.5 million U.S. TV viewers last season, beating the same-day Formula 1 Las Vegas broadcast. Now the goal is turning those viewers into real fans by leaning into rivalries, stories, and the humans behind the helmets. Think heroes, villains, and a little drama. If people care who wins or loses off the water too, SailGP’s audience could explode.
ILCA and Dragon Class commit to RaceSense for 2026 and beyond (2 min read)
Two big classes are bringing some tech to the start line. The ILCA class will debut RaceSense at the 2026 ILCA Worlds in Dun Laoghaire after a successful test run in 2025, aiming to cut down on messy recalls and OCS drama. The Dragon class is jumping in too, adding the system to its rules starting April 2026 with the Dragon Grand Prix in Sanremo. Using GPS tracking and automated start detection, RaceSense promises cleaner starts, faster race management, and fewer sailors arguing with the race committee after the gun.
2026 iQFOiL International Games #2 at Cádiz – Day 3 (2 min read)
Cádiz served up perfect thermal breeze and the iQFOiL fleet absolutely lit it up with high-speed Upwind Sprint racing. Spain’s Pilar Lamadrid kept the hometown crowd happy, extending her lead in the women’s fleet, while Brazil’s Mateus Isaac went on a heater with four race wins to retake the men’s lead. The youth fleets were just as spicy, with Turkey’s Parla Kabasakal stacking wins in U17 Girls and France’s Swann Manhaval holding steady in U17 Boys. With the event past halfway, the fight for medal series spots is getting tight.
Sydney Harbour finally delivered the goods with a proper 15–18 knot sea breeze, and the 18-footers absolutely sent it. Shaw and Partners-Australia dominated Race 4, while Lazarus Capital Partners grabbed Race 5 after a full-throttle run to the line with Yandoo and Black Knight breathing down their necks. Torn kites, penalty turns, and finishes decided by seconds kept things spicy all day. Defending champs Yandoo still lead overall, but with discards coming and four races left, the leaderboard could flip fast. Buckle up.
