Sailing News for February 24, 2026

Long Beach is gearing up for high-stakes match racing as the 2026 Ficker Cup announces a stacked lineup with Congressional Cup spots on the line, while Sydney Harbour’s 18ft Skiff scene continues to hum with Yandoo wrapping up the Club Championship and firing a warning shot ahead of the JJ Giltinan Worlds. Offshore sailing delivered something far more sobering with the unforgettable final voyage of Magic Bus, a routine delivery that turned into a middle-of-the-night life raft rescue 280 miles offshore. Shoreside, nearly 9,000 sailors packed the RYA Dinghy and Watersports Show to kickstart the season, and in Brisbane Brendan Casey set the early pace at the Finn World Masters against a massive fleet. The future looks bright too, with a first-ever Northern Territory sailor breaking into the Australian Youth Squad, and the RORC Caribbean 600 preview promising maxis, MOD70s and tradewind chaos around Antigua in what should be another full-send edition.

Title: Skippers Announced for 2026 Long Beach Yacht Club Ficker Cup (5 min read)
The lineup is set for the 2026 Ficker Cup, and it’s stacked. Eight skippers will battle in Long Beach for two golden tickets to the Congressional Cup, including hometown legend Scotty Dickson chasing redemption and Sweden’s red hot Oscar Engström looking to back up his world championship runner up finish. Nicole Breault is hunting history as a potential first female Congressional Cup winner. April match racing in the stadium? Yes please.

The Final Voyage of Magic Bus (12 min read)
A routine offshore delivery turns into a full blown survival story when the 54 foot catamaran Magic Bus starts flooding 280 miles off North Carolina. Five young sailors fight rising water, blown sails and dead engines before stepping into a life raft at 3:30 a.m. in 45 knots and 15 foot seas. An EPIRB, a looping C-130 and a Coast Guard Jayhawk save the day. It’s raw, funny, terrifying and unforgettable. You’ll want to read this one.

18ft Skiffs – Club Champs & Season Point Score (4 min read)
Yandoo slammed the door on the 2025–26 Club Championship with another clinical win on Sydney Harbour, leading nearly start to finish in a breezy 10 to 15 knot nor’easter. John Winning Jr and crew made it look routine, while Balmain and Vaikobi fought hard for the scraps behind them. Over in the Season Point Score, Sixt locked it up with an 18 point cushion. With the JJ Giltinan Worlds next, Yandoo just fired a pretty loud warning shot.

Olympic Class/Dinghy Sailing

2026 RYA Dinghy & Watersports Show Gets Water Lovers Fired Up for the Season (5 min read)
Nearly 9,000 sailors and board riders packed Farnborough to kick off the 2026 season at the RYA Dinghy & Watersports Show. Three live stages, 180 exhibitors and plenty of Olympic star power, including iQFOiL world champs Emma Wilson and Andy Brown, kept the place buzzing. From foilers to classic dinghies, it was all there, plus awards, prize boats and nonstop gear chat. If winter had you snoozing, this was the wake up call.

2026 Finn World Masters at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron – Day 1 (4 min read)
Brendan Casey came out swinging at the Finn World Masters in Brisbane, winning both races on Day 1 against a 107 boat fleet. Racing in 8 to 15 knots on Waterloo Bay, Casey looked locked in while Spain’s Rafa Trujillo and Britain’s Lawrence Crispin slotted into the early podium spots. With Oscar flag pumping in Race 2 and the breeze building, it was classic Finn hiking and grit. If this is the warm up, the week’s going to get spicy.

Youth Sailing/Development

First Ever Territory Sailor Selected for the Australian Sailing National Youth Squad (3 min read)
Fourteen year old Fynn just made history as the first Northern Territory sailor named to the Australian Sailing National Youth Squad. He started kiting at Rapid Creek at seven, with no local coaches or comps, and somehow mastered kite surfing, wing foiling and kite foiling anyway. Most of his travel and training has been bankrolled by his parents. Now he’s headed to the AIS and onto a real pathway toward Youth Worlds and, if all goes right, Brisbane 2032.

Sailing Highlight of the Day

The 17th RORC Caribbean 600 is set to light up Antigua with 56 boats and nearly 500 sailors charging into the tradewinds. The 100 footers Black Jack and Leopard 3 are primed for a proper line honors duel, while the MOD70s Argo and Final Final promise 30 knot multihull chaos. There’s everything from foiling offshore cats to gritty Corinthian crews chasing a safe finish. Sun, squalls and sail changes at every island turn. This one’s never boring.
